Lapwing - Aft Deck & Side Deck
(Click on image for larger version)
The laid deck is bent or swept round the cabin side-carlin, starting with the inner most strake first, which follows a fair line as it leaves the cabin extremities until it co-incides with the centre line of the deck. All the remaining strakes then follow suit to produce an even and consistent laid deck of parallel curves. The centre (king plank) and outer margins (cover boards) are cut rather than bent to shape, and since the cabin side is never quite parallel to deck edge, this forms a neat correction of any disparity between the line of each. Each strake may be formed from 2,3, or 4 pieces, and the timber iscut and selected so that when these pieces are butted together, there are no other joints co-inciding in an adjacent strake. Every piece is thus schemed, offered up and marked in a "dry fit" before the actual laying of the deck may commence, and in this way we are able to ensure that there is no wastage.
