Lapwing - Engine Installation

The inboard Beta 10hp diesel engine viewed from the port forward cabin facing the stem, this engine is employed because of its superior efficiency, low emission characteristics and cleanliness in operation. The engine is purposely located in the forepeak to reduce noise when cruising under engine, when in fact it is almost inaudible the only real noise being the hum of the propeller beneath the feet of the helm. There are numerous other advantages, including ease of servicing, cleanliness during servicing without the need to enter the accommodation, no smell of oil or diesel inside the boat and the ability to concentrate all of the domestic systems in one area. In regard to the latter, we now equip our bigger boats with two engine driven alternators to separately feed the engine and domestic systems each with their own batteries. There are few disadvantages and in fact none to the end user, from a constructional point of view there is really only the length of shaft and alignment to juggle with, some 18ft from drive plate to propeller but we believe that the extra effort in achieving this is well worth the advantages gained by those using the boat. The effort in the build occurs only once, the enjoyment in use should be every time the engine is used. The main fuel tank can be seen right in the extremity of the stem, an area of little other use for any other purpose, weight distribution once the water tanks are filled and the crew are on board, is right "on her lines".
